A Code of Conduct for Boatmen, Trout Anglers & Salmon Anglers on Tweed and its tributaries
[REVISED 2007]
INTRODUCTION
In the Code, the term “Trout Anglers” is inclusive of Grayling Anglers.
Specific waters may have rules additional to this Code.
IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CODE
The Code satisfies three major principles:-
1. Salmon anglers should always have priority.
2. It is a legal requirement that Trout anglers must have written permission to fish and must have it in their possession when fishing.
3. Trout anglers who have written permission to fish have a legitimate right of access to the water.
THE CODE
1. The Proprietor, or his Representative, may verify that the Trout angler has written permission to fish: this will establish social contact.
2. There should be no restrictions on where Trout anglers may fish if Salmon anglers are not present, providing they adhere to the conditions of the appropriate permit.
3. Trout anglers wearing chest waders must not wade deeper than hip height.
4. Trout fishing times are not restricted but may be subject to local Association or Club rules.
5. On the arrival of Salmon anglers, the Trout anglers should withdraw and ask the Boatman, if present, for advice.
6. Trout anglers should have access upstream of a Salmon angler. This must be of sufficient distance to be clear of the Salmon backcast and must be at least the 20 metres already stipulated in the main Tweed Angling Code.
7. Access downstream of a Salmon angler should be discussed and agreed with the Boatman. An exception could be water that is clearly recognised as not Salmon water.
8. At all times Anglers and Boatmen should be courteous to one another and other river users.
